Prolific and profound, uncertain yet searching, Sarah Kinsley’s surefooted songs are a powerful reflection of her ever-evolving self. The EP’s five songs, including the shimmering pop of “Oh No Darling!,” “Lovegod” and the powerful “Black Horse,” were created by Kinsley in her NYC apartment recording studio. There she did it all: production, synths, midi drum programming, guitar and strings--even ersatz slide guitar. In her songs, Kinsley brings wonder and weirdness, musically and lyrically, as well as via her cinematic videos. (In middle school, she wanted to be a director.) Yet there’s a maturity and thoughtfulness in Ascension that belies her youth.
